Behold, the unholy marriage of a Tegra 3 game on a Snapdragon S4 device!

HTC One X

One of the greater marketing successes of the past year or so has come from NVIDIA and its Tegra platform. Tegra 2 kicked off the dual-core era in early 2011. And in late fall last year, it upped the game even more with the quad-core Tegra 3 platform.

One of NVIDIA's major competitors in the space, Qualcomm, has answered back in 2012 with its dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and Adreno graphics. And in one of those bizarre manufacturing twists that can only happen with Android (or so it seems), we've got the opportunity to see both in action in the HTC One X.

It can get a little confusing, though. In the United States, the HTC One X refers (thus far) to AT&T's version with its Qualcomm processor and LTE data. Outside the U.S., the Qualcomm version is referred to the HTC One XL, and Tegra 3 is the One X. Follow?

Back to Tegra 3. For some time, NVIDIA's strategy rested solidly on Tegra 3-optimized games only being available on Tegra 3 devices, and some only through NVIDIA's own Tegra Zone store. A number of titles have since made their way into Google Play Store at large and are now available on non-Tegra 3 devices. We're using Riptide GP as our example, because we're very familiar with it. Very. There's a version in the Google Play store that plays on pretty much all high-end devices -- Qualcomm S3 and S4, OMAP, Exynos, etc. It plays very nicely, and our hat's off to the developers for such a great game.

But when that same game is loaded up on Tegra 3 devices, you see all sorts of effects and graphics that other processors just can't handle. Things like water splashes on the screen, or a cool hyperspeed blurring effect when you use speed boosts. Here's what the developers have to say --

“RIPTIDE GP ENHANCED FOR TEGRA 3!
The quad-core power of NVIDIA's Tegra 3 superchip has enabled us to add even more detail and excitement to the Riptide GP experience.  Tegra 3 players get extra-high-detailed normal-mapped waves, realistic water splashes on the camera, and a dramatic motion blur effect when boosting.  Riptide GP looks even better thanks to the power of Tegra 3!”

Other games, like Shadowgun THD won't even load on our S4 powered HTC One X. And on GTA3, you need to be running a Tegra 3 to max out all the settings and run at the full frame rate. We can't just dismiss these differences, and NVIDIA gets the nod for having the wow factor.

So. What happens when you run one of our favorite games -- Riptide GP -- on the dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 version of the HTC One X? Only one way to find out. Hit the break to see how it holds up.

Panasonic's hair-washing robot exterminates dirt, unauthorized humans (video)

Image

Panasonic is now testing its hair-washing robot at a salon in Nishinomiya, Japan. Designed to care for the elderly or the physically less-able, it sprays water, shampoo and conditioner over your bonce while 24 robotic fingers knead at your scalp. The company claims that it offers a more satisfying and relaxing experience than a wash from a human, unless you remember what happened when Mr. Kinney tested ED 209. If you're in the Osaka region, you've got until June 10th to get down there and have a go yourself -- for everyone else, there's a video after the break.

Leaked Android Music app images and hands-on review

Android Music player
This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled 'version 3', is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish -- and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

If you don't have Android 2.3 -- or don't want to root your phone to install the leaked Music app -- take a look through our gallery, and then read on for our initial hands-on impressions.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

windows home server 2011 whs
Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager
GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a "completely new, modern desktop designed for today's users and technologies."

The best way to check out GNOME 3's new features -- and it has lots of new features -- is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren't actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros -- it's the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you're feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game

battlepaint
In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Pacemaker DJ app for BlackBerry PlayBook impressions (video)

Pacemaker DJ app for BlackBerry PlayBook impressions (video)

Back in 2008, a nifty little box of tricks elbowed its way onto the market -- the Tonium Pacemaker. A gadget about the size of an OG PSP, with a complete DJ set-up hidden inside. It was a brave idea, and one that was fondly received. A few years down the line, mixed with a sprinkling of business politics, and sadly the Pacemaker's time on stage would come to an end. Like all good performances though, the show wasn't completely over. In true musical fashion its back for an encore, reinvented and more importantly -- right now at least -- in our hands. We spent sometime with the reincarnated Pacemaker DJ app, to see what life is like after hardware.

Apparently, Copyright Trolls Don't Need to Tell the Band When Suing Its Fans [Video]

Unless your band's name ends with "etallica," suing your fans for copyright infringement is very bad for publicity (and even if it does, that's still a dick move Lars). So, imagine All Shall Perish's surprise when they learned that a Panamanian copyright troll, which no one remembers hiring, recently filed suit against 80 of their fans. More »
