Jelly Bean port passes the butter to the Galaxy S III, ROM-flashing required

Image

It took only one day for devs to unleash Jelly Bean 4.1 from its server confines and out into the eager underbelly of Android's community. And those enterprising hackers haven't wasted any time getting that buttered up OS running on Galaxy Nexus handsets (yes, even for Verizon subs). Now, good news is also on the way for any consumers who forsook the pure Google path in favor of Samsung's TouchWizzed way. That's right, a (mostly) working port has been made available to Galaxy S III (I9300) users that should see some of that point upgrade's features successfully implemented. Feel free to take it for a test run if you're skilled in the ways of flashing, but bear in mind you'll lose access to the camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, storage and audio. It goes without saying that this build is far from the perfect ROM for a daily driver, but if you're curious to check it out first-hand, there's no harm in trying. Hit up the source below for the step-by-step how-to.

BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

NASA's NuSTAR probe snaps first X-ray image of feeding black hole

NASA's NuSTAR probe snaps first Xray image of a feeding black hole

It was Bret Easton Ellis who coined the phrase, "The better you look, the more you see," and it appears the folks down at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab agree. In what's considered a "first," the agency's latest space-scouring probe, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, has turned on its X-ray vision to capture focused images of a black hole, dubbed Cygnus X-1, feeding on a nearby giant star. By tuning into these high-energy frequencies, scientists are getting a peak into a previously unseen side of the heavens at 100 times the sensitivity and 10 times the resolution of any preceding tech. The space agency plans to use the observatory's powerful sight to suss out other known areas of mass X-ray activity like 3C273, an active quasar located two billion light years away and even explore G21.5-0.9, the fallout from a supernova within the Milky Way galaxy. NuSTAR's first tour of galactic duty will span two year's time, during which it'll attempt to record imagery from "the most energetic objects in the universe, " as well as track the existence of black holes throughout the cosmos. Impressed? Yeah, us too.

Can Stereomood, the Emotion-Based Playlister, Make Me Angry? [Video]

The details often vary, but most streaming radio apps function in the same general way - cue up an artist station, start giving feedback in the form of "likes" and "dislikes," and let the app respond by giving you music that fits the profile of what you've told it you're into. The technology behind the scenes varies from app to app, but that's the basic idea. More »

Plight of the Zombie arrives with over 30 deliciously brainy puzzles

Plight of the Zombie

Although I'm not normally a fan of games that require me to think a lot, a new puzzle game named Plight of the Zombie has me rather engaged at the moment. In it, you must figure out how to collect as many brains as possible all while trying to avoid getting killed by those blasted uninfected humans.

  • Play over 30 deliciously brainy puzzles
  • Support a savory cause by helping end zombie hunger
  • Appetizing store with plenty of tasteful accessories for your zombies
  • It’s free! Some people say there’s no such thing as a free lunch. We beg to differ...

Plan your route, grab some brains and move on to the next level. If you get stuck, you can optionally purchase items to help get you past the harder levels but it's more fun trying to get past them the old school way. Plight of the Zombie is available now for free in the Google Play Store. You can jump below to check out the game trailer and grab the download.
